Relief Projects

Typhoon Haiyan

Everyday, the Philippine tribal people are watching their families and neighbors die, and the nightmares are only just beginning for these victims who aren’t yet able to think about the loss of their homes and livelihoods; they’re just trying to find simple shelter and food to keep their children alive.

The Typhoon Haiyan Story

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on November 8. The storm’s wind speeds of 195 miles per hour are the highest ever measured.

The Philippines are a collection of islands, with populations spread over large distances and mostly residing near the water. This makeup causes the nation to be particularly vulnerable to typhoons (typhoons and hurricanes are essentially the same, however, the name typhoon is used in the Pacific Ocean and hurricane in the Atlantic). The spread out nature of the Philippines and weak infrastructure (just over 22% of their roads are paved) has made disaster relief efforts particularly difficult.

This projects is to raise $10,000 to aid the Higa-Onon tribe in recovering from their devastating losses in Typhoon Haiyan.

Like many Americans, I was shocked at the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. Typhoon Haiyan is similar, minus the resources and infrastructure we have in the US to respond.
